Technique

For his canvases Tomasz Kostecki uses exclusively historic oil painting techniques which go back to the 16th century. His technique is a long and complex process which uses a set of different oil painting techniques.

Technique - Step 1 On a thoroughly primed canvas, the artist executes a careful and unmistaking detailed drawing. He then applies a thin layer of grey colours (monochromatic base) which brings out the proportions and depths of the forms.

Technique - Step 2 Applying the transparent colours on the base is the next, quite prolonged step. On one hand, aiming to change the impression of the nuances. On the other hand, they act on the painting as a whole, creating harmony and atmosphere, and developing a complete new sense of colour.

Technique - Step 3 When analysing the surface of Kostecki's paintings, we can distinguish yet other oil painting techniques. The major part of the painting shows very detailed execution. Layers continue to be very thin, transparent or use very little paint, so that the surface is almost smooth with hardly any traces of brushstrokes.
